My latest voyage in reading brought me to the New York Times Best Seller—Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment by Steve Harvey. Typically, I would not reach for a book about male/female relationships, but my girlfriend got hooked reading it at the bookstore and was exuberantly promoting it last week. The subject matter did peak my interest, possibly because I’m newly divorced, and I figured it might be helpful to try to get some insight into the male psychology. The title is wildly popular—the RCLS has 27 copies—all checked out mind you, with a waiting list of 119 requests. I got right down to business and finished the book in two days. Harvey, who is a popular comedian and radio host, claims in his book that “women are clueless about men” and “men get away with a whole lot of stuff.” He suggests that men are basically simple creatures and explains to his female readers what makes men tick. He undertakes the subjects of mama’s boys, independent and lonely women, and the matter of children in the dating world. Feminists may raise an eyebrow at some of Harvey’s suggestions, but those seeking out love and relationship advice should make a go of this title.
