What's Up with Miss Jennifer?

  • More sports-NASCAR

Did anyone see the race at Talladega on Sunday?  There were some incredible wrecks.  Boy was I upset when Junior got caught up in that wreck.  I was hoping he would win.  It amazes me the mess they make of their cars when they crash into the walls and into each other.  How did your favorite driver do?

  • Football

So, what football team are you rooting for this year?  My favorite teams are the Jets and the Giants and the Bears.  If you stop by the library you can see my library bear dressed up like a Jets cheerleader.

Have you ever been to a football game?  I once went to a Giants/Jets preseason game.  I had a great time.

  • Can you help us?

We need some acorns, well we really need alot of acorns.  Do you have acorns in your yard?  If so, collect some in a bag and bring them to the children's room.  We will be using them soon for a storytime craft.

  • How is school going?

Do you have any good stories about school to share?

I have noticed that many kids are working on reports.  Newbery award winning books and books about natural disasters seem to be the favorites this week.

I remember my first report I ever gave in school it was probably in first grade.  We were each given an invention and had to tell about it as well as dress up as our invention.  I was the Franklin Stove.  Yup, Benjamin Franklin, the guy with the kite and the key, invented a stove.  So, there I stood in a box (it was black so we must have painted it) with a stove pipe coming out of the top (and of course my head came out the top).  I wonder if my Mom has a picture of it.  If she does I will try and post it.

Share with me what you have been up to.

  • You still have time to sign up for storytime

There are still a few spots left for storytime.  While some classes are full there are still some spots available for all ages.  Please check the website or call the library.

  • Back from vacation

    Hi!

Well, we made it back from Virginia.  The trip down was exciting since we drove right through Tropical Storm Hannah.  I do not recommend this.  We (my husband, ribbit reader and I) had a great time.  We went to Busch Gardens and rode on the Loch Ness Monster and the Big Bad Wolf Roller Coasters, we went on the log flume twice and had a great time crashing into each other on the bumper cars.  We also found lots of great treats to eat, ice cream, cotton candy and german pickles.

The next day we went on a tour of the Norfolk Naval Base.  They take you around the base on a bus and we got to see the George Washington leaving with all the Naval crew in their whites standing on deck.  It was very moving and after the tour we thanked the tour guide (who was in the navy) for protecting our country.  We also got to see many different types of ships and aircraft.  I would recommend going if you are ever in the area.

I had no luck finding the missing frog, although I did take some pictures with ribbit reader #4 relaxing at our hotel.  I hope to have some word about him when I get back to work tomorrow.

  • A Mystery at the Library

    Hi! everyone,

I have a mystery for you.  Today, as we were cleaning up after summer reading we realized that frog #2 (aka ribbit reader) has hopped away.  He was here, we remember him being returned to the library, but now he is missing.  What happened to frog #2?  Did he hop off to the beach for some more vacation fun?  I don't know.

If you have seen him or know of his whereabouts please contact Miss Babara at the library.  I am heading to Williamsburg, Virginia to look for him.  Wish me luck.

  • Our new storytime room mural

There are two ways to check out our new storytime room mural.  First, you can stop by the library and see it is person. Second, you can click under kids stuff on the website and then on pictures of stuff to take a look.

    Enjoy.

  • Congratulations!!! Summer Readers!!!

Congratulations to all the Suffern Summer Readers.  608 children completed the program this year.  That is better than last year.  We gave out 100s of prizes and are still in the process of handing out the final book prizes.  We hope you all had as much fun as we did.  Don't forget to check out the calendar of events to see what is coming up in September.

If you have not gotten your summer reading book yet.  Come in now...before it is too late.  If the book you want is not in the library we can always send for it from another library.

  • Olympics

I hope you are all getting a chance to enjoy of some of the Summer Olympics.  So far, I have seen swimming, beach volleyball, gymnastics, skeet shooting, boxing, water polo and even some badminton.  I am amazed by how many different sports are represented.  I had never seen handball played before the other day and water polo exhausts me even just watching it on television.

I am very impressed with the athletes.  Did you see how hard it was raining during the beach volleyball?  I think I would have been sneezing and coughing the rest of the games if I was out in that weather.

    What are your favorites?

  • Dragonflies! What do they do?

Someone asked me the other day, why are there dragonflies?  So, I looked it up on Grolier Online, one of the library databases that you can use in the library or from home.  A dragonfly's main purpose seems to be eating other insects.  I hope they eat alot of mosquitos.

  • Ideas for Trips Continued

Another great idea when you are traveling is to give your children a book they can use as a travel log.  Take them to Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc and let them pick out a hardcover book with blank pages.  I like the spiral binding kind since they stay open more easily when writing in them.

Then bring pencils, pens, scotch tape and maybe even some colored pencils along on the trip (markers leach through the paper).

I am on my second book and I fill them with funny things that happen, license plates I see, miles I travel, what I eat and then I tape all sorts of things in.  I save plants and flowers and lots of empty sugar packets that have names of hotels and restaurants in my log.

My mom has logs pasted in all her travel scrapbooks.  It is great fun to see how much it cost to eat and sleep on the old trips, so add that to your log.  (Moms and Dads, by sharing some of the costs of your trip, such as gas and food, it can help children begin to understand money and costs with regards to the things we do).

So get out your notebooks and starting saving those memories.

  • What to do on long car trips.

I am very surprised, but glad to hear that gas prices have not ended all the car trips this summer.  I have always been a big fan, ever since I was a child and my parents would pile my sister, brother and myself in our station wagon and head cross country (not once but several times over the years).  So, here are some things to do on those long trips, without using the DVD player.  Yes, kids there were no DVD players when I was a little girl.

    1.  Car games- You can collect license plates.  See if you can find one from every state.  It is not easy, in 38 years I think I have only gotten all 50 twice.  One trip we got them all (yes Alaska & Hawaii) but not Rhode Island.  We wanted our parents to keep driving around until we found one.

A second game we made up that was alot of fun, doesn't have a name but it works like this.  You can have teams or each individual can play by themselves.  Each team picks the name of a hotel, restaurant, gas station, grocery store, and a department store.  Each time you see one you get a point.  To make it fair we would let a different person pick first in each category.  It was always fun trying to see what was coming up at the next exit through the trees on the highway (no counting when you see them listed on a sign telling you what is at the next exit).

    2.  The goodie bags - My Mom always had two bags.  One had candy and gum and pretzels and chips, while the other had things to do, such as crayons, coloring books, Yes & No books (kids ask your parents what they are) (parents you can still get them in places like Cracker Barrel), and other things we could do in the car.

If we were driving three or more hours in a day, we got to pick from the activity bag.  We got to chose from the bag with the yummy things to eat, always after lunch and if we were not driving our parents to nuts.  When we were younger and my parents wanted us to nap (we could pretend to sleep if we really couldn't sleep) we could pick a treat when we woke up.  My brother always had a hard time pretending to sleep, so I would share my treat with him.

    3.  Stopping -  This was a great way to make a long drive fun.  My parents were always willing to stop and see the great things that were along the way.  I remember one time we were out around Colorado.  The kids were asleep and my parents were driving on this road they call the million dollar highway (because of the views).  They drove down the road for about a half an hour when they decided to turn around, go back to the beginning and wake us up so we could see what we were missing.  I still remember how amazing the mountains and rivers were.

We have lots of great pictures of us at various pullovers along the road. One I remember us all getting wet under a waterfall that was cascading over the mountain at the pullover.

    4.  Don't forget music, I learned to love classical as well as the Beatles on those trips and stories, my mom read us lots of books and now with books on cd the whole family can enjoy the books.

    5.  Driving while the kids are sleeping.  This tip is for the parents.  When we drove cross country we would leave at 2:00AM.  We would sleep while my parents drove.

Have a great trip.  If I think of some more of the things we did, I will post them.

  • Moths, Moths, Moths

I have a moth problem, they are eating clothes.  So, now I have to go to the store and get some cedar chips for my drawers.  Of course, I looked up a book on why they are eating my clothes.

"Clothes moth larvae feed on wool and nibble holes in sweaters and coats."  (Moths by Jen Green)Now the question is they are not eating my wool and they are eating my cotton clothes.  Maybe they are confused moths.

Maybe, I have been blaming the moths and it is something else.  Miss Babara thinks its my washing machine or maybe the chlorine in my water is running my clothes.

If solve the mystery I will keep you updated.

  • Bugs, Bugs and more Bugs....

    Do Spiders Have Ears?

"No. But spiders have every good hearing.  They pick up sound viberations with tiny hairs on their legs and other parts of their bodies".

from Do All Spiders Spin Webs? by Melvin and Gilda Berger

    Did you know?

"An insect must shed its skin, or molt, as it becomes bigger and grows a new, larger exoskeleton. Insects like the mayfly molt as many as fifty times in their life! And you thought you went through a lot of clothes!"
