  • We got the DVD home from the library and it does not work

You got the DVD home from the library and it is not working.  When you take a look at it you see numerous scratches.  What do you do?

Bring it back to us and tell the people at the front desk.  They will not blame you.  It happens all the time and although I can not tell you why they are scratched so often, I can tell you how to avoid scratching it.

    1.  Do not allow young children to handle the DVDs.  No matter how careful they may be just taking it in and out of the case can cause damage.

    2.  If you notice that the hub in the center is broken and that the disc is loose in the case, please tell us so we can replace the case before it gets more scratched.

    3.  Do not leave them out without the case.  Just rubbing against other items can cause scratches.  Sadly, they are not the most durable item in our collection.

When you do bring it back and tell us it is scratched we send it out to get fixed.  This way the next time you check out the movie it will be in working order again.

    Thank you for your help

  • Did you ever have a bad day?

First, let me start by saying today is Monday (and since you have to get up early for school or work Mondays are not the best days of the week).

Second, let me tell you why you should never bring a jar of pickles with you for lunch (or dinner if you are working late).

This morning I made a chicken sandwich for my dinner break and decided I would want something more to eat, so I grabbed a jar of pickles.  Well, as I was driving to work something was happening in my paper bag with my lunch, because as I was about to get out of my car in front of the Library the bag ripped and pickle juice and my dinner spilled all over my lap, onto the front seat of my car and the jar fell out into the parking lot.  Somehow the jar did not break and the lid was still on and the jar was still filled with pickles.

Well, there I am sitting in my car covered in pickle juice and it is time to go to work.  So, I transfer my lunch into a plastic bag and find that the juice had leaked from my lunch bag into my regular bag (luckily onto an old shirt I had cut up to use at work for rags, so the book I had did not get wet).  When I go into the library my pants are wet, my sweater is damp and I smell like a German Deli.

I then called home and asked them to bring my dry pants.  I really did not want to smell like pickles all day.

And that is why I have brown shoes on with grey pants.

Have you ever had a bad day?  Tell me about it.

  • National Poetry Month

    by Judy Sierra

    Mary Had A Vampire Bat

    Mary had a vampire bat.

His fur was black as night.

He followed her to school one day

    And promised not to bite.

    She brought him out for show-and-tell;

    The teacher screamed and ran.

And school was canceled for a week,

    Just as Mary planned.

Did you enjoy that poem?  Then stop by the children's room and check out "Monster Goose" by Sierra or any of our other wonderful poetry books.

There is a display by the book couch.

  • And the rain came down

So, this weekend as I watched the rain come down and the lake I live on come up I thought of how much worse it might be.  I saw the Ramapo river on both sides of houses instead of just flowing behind them and saw a car with water up to its windows in the local park and ride.

We were lucky, although the lake covered the lower part of the patio and some water came into the laundry room, we were able to keep it pumped out so just a small corner of the room had water.

How did everyone make out during the storm?  Do you have some pictures or a story to share with me?

Or are you interested in other "natural disasters", floods, earthquakes etc.  In that case come in and check out the display by the nonfiction section in the children's room.

  • Bookflix

Just a friendly reminder (or a "new" database if you haven't seen it) to check out Bookflix.

Just go to student databases on the Library's website http://www.rcls.org/db/suf/maggen.htm#student

and click on the link for bookflix from your home.  You will need your Suffern Library Barcode to login.

You will find lots of books that you can read along with or just listen to them.  One of the things I like best is for each story there is a true book with facts about the subject.  There are also puzzles and games to do with each book.  I like word match where each answer uncovers a section to a hidden picture.  Enjoy the fun.

Parents this is great for children learning to read, as you can click on read along and let the child follow along with the reader.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, Betsy Ross, Christa Mcauliffe, Rosa Parks, Jackie Mitchell, Helen Keller, Cleopatra and Beverly Cleary.

    Do you give up?

What if I told you I could add your grandmother or even your great grandmother to the list?

    Still don't know.

Well, they are all women and March is Women's History Month.

So, stop in the Children's Room and grab a piece of history.

  • Is Spring on its way?

MARCH 20th is the first day of Spring and I am already seeing signs of its arrival.  Even though most of my yard is still buried under snow (I'm in Orange County), the daffodils are coming up along the house where the snow has melted.

Then, last night a red fox ran across the road as I drove home, so I guess they are done hibernating.

This month you can also pick up books about the different celebrations that take place in Spring including, St. Patrick's Day, Passover, Easter and April Fool's Day.  Also, check out a book about Baseball since Spring training is under way.

Did you know that the average American eats 250 eggs each year? -from Spring by Jill Kalz

From Spring by Anna Claybourne- Try an experiment.  Have Mom or Dad cut a twig from a tree or plant such as Forsythia and put it in some water in a sunny spot.  See if the leaves or flowers come out first on your twig or on the tree outside.

For lots of other Spring ideas come check out a book at the Library.
